Harlan ARH moving fast, approaching 50 year anniversary
Regular Meeting, February 8, 2006

1     February's guest speaker was Donnie Fields, Interim CEO of Harlan ARH Hospital and Community CEO of Whitesburg ARH Hospital.

Fields has been Community CEO for Whitesburg ARH Hospital since 1998 and is a 21-year veteran of ARH. He began as an accounts supervisor at Whitesburg and also served in positions as an administrative assistant and assistant administrator. Fields has been Interim CEO at Harlan since the resignation of former CEO Mike Layfield.

Fields came with a message stressing the imporance of the hospital in the community and the great efforts in the past months to improve the quality of healthcare at the facility. He explained the five integral parts of the hospital's framework: Staff, medical staff, advisory council, auxillary and community.

"It's our hospital, and it's everybody, together, making it work," he said.

Fields also brough interesting statistics about the hospital's impact in Harlan County. In the past seven months, the hospital has delivered 168 newborns and provided $3.8 million in charity care. In the past year the hospital has cared for over 77,000 people. Harlan ARH accounts for 30% of the payroll in Harlan County with an average of 700 employees, and has an estimated economic impact of $14 million per year.

Harlan ARH Public Relations Director Mark Bell also announced that the hospital will be celebrating it's 50th anniversary beginning March 21 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception beginning at 1pm, followed by a week of special lunches and events for various parts of the healthcare community.

He said the celebration would be extravagant, as staff would be dressing up in 1950's clothing and vintage 50's vehicles will be parked outside.

"You only turn 50 once," he said.
